Alumni Network

From Ecologic

Jump to: navigation, search

The Rensselaer Alumni Association has started an Environment alumni affinity group called SustainAffinity. This is the first step in a larger push to help connect current students and alumni who are interested in preserving the environment and working towards a sustainable future.

Contents

[edit] Prospective benefits

  • Improve connections between environmentally interested RPI students after graduation (physical reunions, online communication)
  • Connect alumni working in environmental fields to each other (job openings, project collaboration)
  • Connect alumni to current students (to discuss hot topics, for job/internship opportunities, etc.)
  • Provide new source of funding and advice for Ecologic and other environmental clubs (ESW, SEP, etc.)
  • Organize alumni get togethers and ecologic parties that actually involve alcohol

[edit] Road map

  1. Contact as many alumni and current students as possible to announce the idea of an alumni environment affinity group
    • Let them know it's coming, and see who'd like to be involved in starting to lead it.
  2. Contact the alumni association and find out what it would take to create a new affinity group.
    • Kyle has some contacts in the alumni association
  3. Identify some initial officers for the group
  4. Start to figure out what the group could do.
    • This would include events every summer at the alumni reunion, as well as some events throughout the year.
    • Basically the same things that the other affinity groups do (or come up with some creative things to distinguish us from the other affinity groups).
  5. Figure out how this group could connect to the current student organizations and certain academic departments.

[edit] Ideas / Purpose / etc.

  • Raise money for a sustainability fund for environmental improvements around campus
  • Greening RAA events
  • Connecting environmental alumni with environmental students
    • Supporting green careers by encouraging networking, mentorship, etc.
    • Channels of communication (email list, envirenns, etc.) between students and alumni
  • Continuing traditions from alumni to current students
  • Support the creation and continuance of sustainability curriculum, if this is possible at all

[edit] Brainstorming and decisions

  • What will the affinity group do?
    • Just a mailing list for alumni and interested students/faculty/staff?
    • Host conference or speakers periodically at RPI or elsewhere (like Building Trades or Biotechnology)
    • Database of alumni donors for fundraising for environment clubs
    • Source of mentors for students interested in careers in the environment
    • Have special events during each summer reunion
    • ???
    • Some combination of the above
  • Get a sustainability fund going - Alumni donate specifically to a fund that supports sustainability projects on campus - Maybe they could even vote on which one(s) to fund?
