As of mid-September 2008, Ben Cohen reported that Sodexho, Greenway and Steve Davis were coordinating with the State economic agency for money for a regional composting facility running by spring '09 (or at least have started a pilot proof of concept project). This is so we can compost things like paper cups and paper plates, which right now must be disposed of as waste.

[edit] Composting

on Campus

  • In 2001 Steve Breyman found the funds for two Earth tubs which are situated by the Greenhouse up on Sunset Terrace
  • Environmental Sites and Services had trouble running and maintaining the Composters and they now need over $1000 worth of repairs
  • No one is sure whether it is worth it to get them running on campus or if we should just donate them
  • there are grants available for these types of initiatives
  • Steve Davis wanted to get them up and Running because that could happen a lot faster than the off campus facility

Off Campus

  • RPI used to send their compost to an off campus facility but they recently went out of business
  • In February of 2008 there was a Composting Symposium held at RPI but many other schools and organizations attended
  • The purpose of the event was to discuss the feasibility of a Composting Facility in the Capital District
  • Greenway gave the impression that it could be a successful business
