EcoHall Challenge
From Ecologic
The EcoHall Challenge is a competition among the freshman hill residence halls, where they compete against one another to see who can use the least amount of energy. The goal is to reduce energy use, and educate the freshman population on energy conservation leading to lifelong good habits.
The budget for the Eco Hall Challenge 2008 is here.

[edit] To Do
ECO-HALL CHALLENGE 2008
- Redesign door hangers
- Redesign posters
- Print all posters and promotional materials
- Poster the dorms
- Contact RHA
- Contact ResLife
- Create packet for RA/LA program focussed on "green" living
- Decide upon prize package
- Brainstorm tangent events/promotions
From 2007:
- Education: How can students live more efficiently?
- Light use: Simple things...Don't leave lights on in unattended bedrooms, restrooms, and study halls. Substitute natural light in place of artificial light whenever possible. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)!
- Water Use: Back to Pre-School! Turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth, down when in regular use.
- Heat Conservation: Ask for heat to be turned down instead of opening windows.
- Recycle paper, plactics, aluminum, glass
- LA/RA program packet. (Tara, Megan, Missy)
- Door Hangars with tips on conserving electricity etc. (Can anyone find the old EcoLogic door hangers?)
- If we do the education idea, maybe add in a section about food waste in the dining halls even though it doesn't affect the competition.
- Once competition has commenced update on the progress of the competition.
- End Competition, Present winning hall with a prize.
[edit] Door Hangers
Check out the design for the door hangers. Leave your comments!
Ella- can you post the final 3 designs on here, and maybe the files to for people to use in future years? -Sam
The RPI Bookstore has their semesterly Cash for Books campaign to bring in books for their used book section. As part of their advertising this semester, they distributed door hangers through on campus mailboxes. They have a perforated cutout and sturdy paper that seem to work well. We should ask them where they got them and consider using that source for our door hangers. -- Jendrd 23:19, 17 December 2007 (EST)

[edit] Eco Hall Challenge Tips:
The tips below were written by RA Nat last year and distributed to Crockett Hall (the winner last year). We could distribute these and/or expnd/edit them as needed.
- Use ambient light (windows). At ~18 watts/hr per fluorescent tube we save about 5000 watts/hr by having the lights off. If you need more light, be sure to use a fluorescent instead of a high intensity desk lamp as the 60 and 80 watt bulbs in those are actually less efficient than the large fluorescent tubes.
- Use headphones. A 1000 watt surround sound speaker system uses about 995 more watts/hr than headphones... and nobody else needs to hear you blasting Michelle Branch
- Use cool settings on washers and dryers. Our washers use about 500 watts/hr on cool setting as opposed to 800 watts/hr on hot. The dryers use ~1400 watts/hr on cool and ~2300 watts/hr on hot.
- Don't even use the dryer. Save a dollar and a minimum of 1400 watts of energy. RA Nat has fishing line and cloths pins if you want to try hanging stuff on your room. He also has an example of hanging clothes in his room currently if you want to see how you can lay it out.
- Don't multitask electronically. If you're doing your homework, watching a movie, or even playing a game on your laptop, try turning off other electronic distractions such as radios of TVs and vice versa.
- Use the community refrigerator/microwave. We have a large refrigerator and microwave in the first floor lounge, try unplugging yours for the rest of the month and just using these options instead.
These are probably the biggest energy savers in the hall, if you want to get more nitpicky about things so we can really obliterate the other halls in this competition talk to RA Nat or LA Tara.
