[edit] To Do
[edit] Get a Name
We need a name for the project. Something catchy, that can become a meme around campus. This is tied up closely with Public Relations. Here are some ideas:
- Recycling Revolt!
- Revamped Recycling
- Recycling@Rensselaer / Recycling@RPI (R@R, pronounced "raar", as in we're growling at you)
Please add any names you come up with, so we can have ideas that aren't lame.
[edit] Open Questions
- What is the scope of this project?
- Who will be the project coordinator? Who will be the Points of Contact (POCs) for the individual organizations involved?
- When we get sub-projects started, each of these will also need a Point of Contact.
[edit] Closer Look at Recycling Today
Let’s take a closer look at our recycling program
- Get building plans with recycling bin locations
- Contact Building Coordinators for each building
- Work on getting layouts for each building
- Identify current recycling locations and troubleshoot
- Design a better recycling layout for each building
- Write up a short summary for each building with old and new recycling bin locations on the floor plan
- Get together in smaller teams of 3-6 people to work on specific projects
[edit] Report
Check out a previous report: A Recycling Proposal for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, May 1995
[edit] Data Collection
- How much recyclable material do we waste?
- How much does it cost RPI? How much could RPI save by recycling?
- Run experiments in specific buildings/locations with and without recycling bins nearby
- Get basic volume estimates (how often bins fill up in different locations)
- Dumpster diving
- Quantify results and develop preliminary reports based on our data
[edit] Cost-Benefit Analysis
- Does this project cost money or save money?
- What variables are involved?
- What is the potential impact it could have on the campus waste stream?
- Bottom line figures
[edit] Case Studies from Other Schools
- What have other schools done to implement recycling on their campuses?
- What works? What doesn’t work?
- What are their numbers? Does it pay off for them?
[edit] Finance
This includes grants, budgeting, saving, spending.
- How much is this project going to cost in capital (one-time expenses)?
- How much money will it save over the long run?
- Where will the money come from?
- Can we get additional funding for this project?
- Does NYS sponsor any programs?
- What about other granting organizations?
