[edit] Vision Statement
[edit] Mission Statement
The SSTF is coalition of student leaders working together with university officials to serve the Rensselaer community and Troy NY as a focal point for the implementation of sustainable practices and pedagogy at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Our purpose is to build community, support the Rensselaer Performance Plan and build visibility all while creating a sustainable culture.
[edit] Statement of Intent for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
To become an example of a university that builds sustainability into all aspects of campus culture including: administration, facilities, outreach, research and teaching. As quoted in the words of a report by the 1987 United Nations’ World Commission on Environment and Development, Sustainability meets the “needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We believe that the true definition of sustainability includes the following objectives:
- To be environmentally responsible
- What does this specifically entail?
- To be socially responsible
- What does this specifically entail?
- To be fiscally responsible
- What does this specifically entail?
[edit] Statement of Goals for Implementing Sustainable Practices and Pedagogy
The SSTF is interested in implementing sustainable practices and pedagogy in order to create an award-winning sustainable campus community.
- {BUILD COMMUNITY} To engage the campus and larger Troy community with education and outreach to subscribe to the objectives of sustainability.
- {SUPPORT THE RENSSELAER PERFORMANCE PLAN} To assist Rensselaer in incorporating sustainability as a tenant of the Rensselaer Performance Plan, including each department at the Institute.
- {BUILD VISIBILITY} To serve as a liaison to (and a communications focal point for) students, various campus organizations, Rensselaer administration and the city of Troy, New York in developing, organizing and advertising events and programs.
[edit] SSTF and an Office of Sustainability
We believe that an Office of Sustainability will naturally complement student efforts to build a sustainable culture. One of our primary goals in the fiscal year 2009 is the creation of such an office. Thus we are working diligently in Spring 2008 on a proposal.
- Here we would put some sort of vision statement about how RPI will be when the work of the Sustainability Task Force is complete…maybe the Sustainability Task Force moves into a checks/balances role? OR it dissolves….
