[edit] Overview

[edit] Vision Statement

Just another step in moving towards a more sustainable campus and world.

[edit] Project Summary

An initiative to move towards a tray free dining system has been attempted before and has failed. Currently there is a halfhearted attempt to inform students of a push towards tray free dining that seems to have little to no effect on the issue. Currently we are awaiting response from Sodexo to proceed on a small awareness campaign.

[edit] Organizations Involved

The following organizations are working together to advance the Recycling Initiative:

We're always looking for other groups to get involved. If any other group would like to get involved, contact Jay Walker, or Anasha Cummings.

[edit] Announcements/News

  • Sodexo is for this initiative but needs to see students involved for them to do anything.
  • Sodexo has said that its ready for volunteers to tell students about trayfree dining at Commons dining hall.
  • This page will be the hub of all the activity for this project. Come here to find out who's doing what, when things are happening, share and collaborate ideas, host discussions, make announcements & suggestions, or anything else related to the trayless dining.

[edit] Roadmap

Things to do:

  • Find out how other schools were able to make the change:

University of Conn. (Trayfree fliers, office of environmental policy), Colby College (Contact is Varun Avasti), Alfred University (Contact is student group Green Alfred), Albright College(Social norm not to use trays, only freshmen use them), Skidmore, Williams, RIT, Cornell, Ithaca College (Stephanie Piech)

  • Prove there's a problem (research and prepare statistics)
  • Find out why students don't want to go trayfree (maybe using easy y/n surveys with an incentive?)
  • Gauge cost savings of trayfree for transparency and to use on materials
  • Find support from other clubs, groups and major figures to spread support throughout the school

[edit] Future

[edit] Tasks

Main page: Trayfree Initiative Tasks

[edit] Data

We're probably gonna need some of this.

[edit] General Information

[edit] Goals

Reduce food waste Reduce water waste Save money

[edit] Arguments Against Trayfree

  • Extra work for the students to go without tray
  • Sodexo saves while students don't get anything
  • Longer lines will result because each trip will be able to carry less food
  • People feel that they don't waste any of the food they get
  • Need to eat or drink two different things at the same time

[edit] Possible Incentives

  • Trickle down savings
  • Desire to want to save food and water
  • Express line for those without dishes (volunteers can demonstrate the increased speed including seperate places for napkins and utensils)
  • Rewards (how will you be able to track those who do or do not use a tray.
  • Punish those who do use trays (randomly select one person who used a tray to lose some bonus bucks?

[edit] Other ideas

Fight food waste directly Trayfree orientation/NRB I go "trayfree" t-shirts Info sticker on all trays Talk to different class councils and other governing bodies, famous figures and other clubs

[edit] Final

Maybe cultural change is impossible in case of this but its worth a strong effort. In case of emergency we can do a structure channel while students are away.
